Show & Tell - October 4, 7:00 to 9:00 pm

Fab Lab Orientation & Safety Class

Make:KC's October Show & Tell will differ from previous events by offering the Fab Lab Orientation and Safety Class. This is a prerequisite to becoming a member of the BTC Fab Lab and access to their selection of great machines. The BTC Fab Lab requires a one time startup fee of $50 that covers the cost of this class. To register for our October 4 Show & Tell - Fab Lab Orientation, please contact the FabLab to sign up for this class. 816-604-5233 or email fab.lab@mcckc.edu

Welcome To The Fab Lab

Make Magazine set the tone for today's Maker Movement. The premier issue, February 2005, included an article titled “Maker: Welcome to the Fab Lab” that provided a tour of Neil Gershenfeld's Fab Lab at MIT. What started as a class called “How to Make (almost) Anything”, grew into a network of labs set up in communities around the world. The Kansas City Metropolitan Community College, Business and Technology campus has opened one of the newest community accessible Fab Labs in the country and is recognized by the United States Fab Lab Network (USFLN).

By becoming a Fab Lab member, we will gain access to a variety of tools including milling machines, lathes, small CNC machines, 3D printers and scanners with more equipment arriving soon.

We are joining the Fab Lab as they are making plans to move to a larger space that includes woodworking equipment and a class room.

Fab Lab Membership

In order to keep the lights on and machines running there is an usage fee for the Fab Lab with the option of a daily, monthly, quarterly basis, or you can skip any month you won't be using the facility. The single day cost is $15, monthly fee is $50 but for Make:KC members the cost is reduced to $40, and we can enjoy an additional 10% discount for quarterly Fab Lab fees.

Make:KC Membership

While the BTC Fab Lab opens new opportunities for us we are still offering activities planned at the HMS Beagle Science Store. Make:KC continues to offer many Build Nights and other activities free of charge or at a nominal fee. Paid membership with Make:KC is optional but it does have its benefits. The HMS Beagle offers Make:KC members a 10% discount on many items and the BTC Fab Lab offers discounts on usage fees. Annual Make:KC membership dues are $40 for family membership, $25 for individuals 18 and over, and $15 for students under 18.
