February 2011 - Show & Tell

Makers of Things

You are invited to join us as we begin a new era of activities with the Metropolitan Community College, Business and Technology Fab Lab opening this spring. We are moving our monthly Show & Tell to the Fab Lab but we're not abandoning the HMS Beagle as we'll continue Build Nights and other activities there too. We are Make: KC, not just Make Parkville and hope to expand meetings, workshops, and other events around the Greater Kansas City area.

New Location.

  • Where: MCC Fab Lab Your Home
  • When: February 1, 2011
  • 6:00 to 9:00 pm

We are planning topics on what the Maker Movement is about and how other groups like CCCKC are pushing this movement ahead too. The Fab Lab concept started at MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms as a new course found that students from all over the campus wanted in. Now Fab Labs are being started up all around the world.

There is a movement toward improving education. Last week the President called for investment in innovation in his State of the Union speech. His “Educate to Innovate” campaign is an initiative to promote excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. We're looking at opportunities that we can be involved with too. One way is by bringing a Young Makers to Kansas City like they have in San Francisco's Exploratorium.

We expect to see projects people are working on and hope you will bring something with you too. There are some big plans for this year and we need your help.
