Fab Lab - Open Build Session - 3:00 to 6:45 p.m.

The MCC-BTC Fab Lab is offering a special afternoon/evening build session for Fab Lab members and non-members to experience what the lab has to offer. We're offering a planned activity to help you learn about the Laser engraver while making laser cut trinket boxes.

To keep this simple the sides and bottom will be cut out ahead of time. You have the chance to get creative with the top of your box. You can find clip art, bring in a photo or image you like, or create your own art work. The lid measures almost 2.75" by 3.25". Enough room to create a nice design. Please RSVP at MakersMail@MakeKC.org so we'll know how many to expect.

Show & Tell - 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Maker Faire Preparation

We have Abby Beckloff coming out to talk about the Maker Faire which will be only two weeks away. We can learn more about what to expect for displays and getting our booths ready.

Antique Fishing Reel Replica

David Hawkins will drop by to talk about the 1937 Shakespeare casting reel he machined and presented to Missouri's Governor Jay Nixon at the Metropolitan Community College graduation recently. You can read more about this project on our web site's article "Artistic Expression Through Digital Fabrication" and the MCC Insider article.
Volunteers Needed

Many of our Make:KC members are exhibiting in the Maker Faire. This two day event presents challenges for each exhibitor and your help is needed. If you aren't exhibiting but would like to become involved with this exciting event please use our contact form or email us at MakersMail@MakeKC.org

Build Night - May 15  Steampunk mask (leather cutting and dyeing).

We are now into the meat of it.  We will be taking a pattern and cutting the leather.  We will also be dyeing the leather.  Bring a Pencil, leather hole punch, sharp razor knife or two.  Bring your brass bits and other fiddley bits to start attaching.

If you were not there last week come on by and we will get you started.

Build Night - May 8 Steampunk mask (design and pattern)

We will be designing and making the pattern for our steampunk mask. The type of mask is like a dust mask.  It will fit over the nose and mouth.

Make:KC - Where Kansas City's Maker Faire's Began...

The Maker Faire in Kansas City is less than eight weeks away. If you haven't looked at the MakerFaire.com web site, Kansas City has been elevated from its mini maker faire status last year to one of the top four in the country this year, alongside Detroit. Remember the BTC Fab Lab is here with equipment and space to work on your projects. It's accessible to the community and at a discount for Make:KC members. This month we have presentations about getting your Power Wheels Racer in tip top shape for another series of exciting racing. The Fab Lab has a new metal fabricator that makes easy work of bending metals for a customized chassis to support your souped up Power Wheels.

Build Night April 24-Stained Glass Boxes

We had a great start with room for new people to join.

I know I keep saying boxes but they look like coffins.

We need to add tops and bottoms and a hinge.

Build nights and scrap nights.

Okay, I have a van load of electric radiator fans that need to be scrapped. I am asking for help to disassemble them and harvest the motors. The motors are powerful enough for power sports racing so this would be a good start for some of you. The plastics have to be trashed unfortunately and anything else that can be recycled we will do so with.

I also have a load of rear view mirrors with electric positioners in them. These would be good for small robotics and such.

RIP Mattie

Kansas City's Maker community had a loss today. John Kuhns called with the sad news. Mattie was behind the store and killed by a train.

Show & Tell – April 3, 7:00 to 9:00 pm

There comes a time in many projects when you need to weld parts together. Unless you weld often, you may want to get some practice or learn the proper techniques and settings for the type of metals you're using. The VRTEX 360 is a virtual realty arc welding simulator made by Lincoln Electric  - www.vrtex360.com. This machine simulates:

  • GMAW -Gas Metal Arc Welding
  • FCAW - Flux Cored Arc Welding
  • SMAW - Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

The welding helmet contains video display eyepieces that allow you to see the workpiece plus visual cues to assist in showing you proper weld angle, weld speed, proper distance to work piece and more.
